WD 1TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive

The drive is very slim and has a nice-looking black metal case with silver accents. There’s a single button on the front to power it on/off along with four green LED lights that indicate how much space is available on the drive. The USB cable can be hidden in a groove beneath the metallic plate attached to the back, which I feel adds a really nice touch.

Reviews of other articles have been positive as well about this particular model of Western Digital hard drives.

Features:

  • Ultra-fast transfer rates β€” up to 5 Gbps when connected to a USB 3.0 port (3 Gbps for USB 2.0, 480 Mbps for USB 1.1)
  • Compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 (USB 3.0 recommended)
  • Downloadable WD Discovery software
  • Password protection plus 256-bit AES hardware encryption
  • Automatic backup – easy to use

Advantages:

  • Sleek design
  • Easy to use
  • Compatibility with different USB ports

Looks aside, the drive itself works great. It immediately operates when plugged in and it’s very quick at transferring files. I had my doubts about how many files it could store, since everything nowadays seems like it requires exponential storage space (I used to own a flash drive that maxed out at around 32 GB).

But 1 TB is definitely enough; you can fit roughly 300,000 photos or 500 hours of video on this little guy. You can also change the password if you want, but be careful: If you forget your password and reset your account without providing your password, all information will be deleted from the drive and no one (not even you) will be able to recover it!

Disadvantages:

The price. At initial glance, this hard drive may seem a little on the high end, clocking in at around $60, but I think it’s worth every penny if you need something portable and dependable.

However, if you’re looking for something with more storage space but don’t want to spend over 100 bucks, Western Digital makes the Passport 2TB Ultra WDBGMT0010BAL that has twice as much memory.

SanDisk 1TB Extreme Portable SSD

SanDisk is announcing their first 1TB (1000GB) external SSD, the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD. This drive has a USB-C port and comes with both the standard USB Type A to USB-C cable as well as an included adapter for use with legacy USB 3.0/2.0 PCs or laptops; it’s also cross-platform compatible (Windows 10, 8.1 & 7; macOS Sierra & High Sierra).

The drive comes in 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities which have respective MSRPs of $99, 199 and 399 USD. However Amazon, BestBuy and others are already offering preorders at less then MSRP which is always nice to see!

  • Get NVMe solid state performance featuring up to 1050MB/sπŸŽ‰

Unfortunately this new high capacity portable SSD is only USB 3.2 Gen 2 (10Gbps) and not Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C 3.1 Gen 2. Thus the reported read/write speeds aren’t blistering fast as you might expect with such a high capacity flash drive that’s meant to replace HDDs. It’s still plenty fast for portable storage though with up to 1050MB/sec sequential reads and 750MB/s sequential writes:

Features:

  • Up to 1050MB/s sequential reads
  • Up to 750MB/s sequential writes
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface with included USB adapter for backwards compatibility with legacy PCs
  • Shock-resistant up to 1500G and waterproof down to 16ft (5m)
  • Compatible with Windows 10, 8.1 & 7; macOS High Sierra & Sierra.
  • TRIM Support

Pros:

  • Extreme capacity (1000GB) in a very compact portable design
  • Up to 1050MB/sec reads and 750MB/s writes with sequential data
  • USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-C interface and backwards compatibility with USB 3.0/2.0 PCs and laptops

Cons:

  • Slow random IOPS for this capacity level, even slower than most high capacity HDDs
  • Not Thunderbolt 3 compatible / USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 so no 40Gbps speeds or USB Power Delivery quick charging πŸ™

Toshiba Canvio Advance 1TB

The Toshiba Canvio Advance is a 1TB external hard drive that has been designed with the home user in mind.

  • USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 compatible.

At just 12.6mm thick and weighing only 200 grams, it can fit into your briefcase or attache case without adding too much weight to your luggage. It uses USB 3.0 as its data interface, which means you’ll get fast data transfer speeds – up to 5 Gbps on this model, but also backward compatibility on USB 2.0 ports if you don’t yet have a computer with USB 3.0 ports on it (or if you’re super frugal). But what makes the Canvio Advance stand out from other drives?

PACKAGING AND CONTENTS

A few weeks ago, I took a look at the Toshiba Canvio Advance 1TB external hard drive model HDTC810XK3A1 ( Black ). While there are some obvious physical differences between this Canvio Advance and its predecessor, most of the changes are on the inside. The new models (the 500GB is HDTB310XK3B1 ) now offer hardware WD SmartWare Pro backup software thanks to the added Western Digital “My Passport” branding.

The packaging has been updated as well, with more vibrant colours that make it stand out from other drives you might see on retail shelves.

Besides the actual hard drive – which comes in anti-static wrap – you’re given a power adapter for 100-240V operation (which is good, since I used it all over the world…), a quick start guide and warranty information.

Features:

– USB 3.0 (backwards compatible with USB 2.0)

– Password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption

Dimensions: 114 x 82 x 12.6mm, 200g

Interface: USB 3.0 / USB 2.0

Pros:

  • Cheap
  • Compact

Cons:

  • Terrible backup software included
  • Slow write speeds on USB 2.0 interface

Bottom line: There are better alternatives out there, but this is one of the cheapest options if you really want a compact 1TB external hard drive. Just make sure you use alternate backup software to WD SmartWare Pro…

LaCie Rugged Mini 1TB External Hard Drive

The LaCie Rugged Mini is an affordable, but very functional external hard drive. It’s easy to use and has a lot of protection against falls and such (it was tested with massive heights).

I like the fact that it has a 1-year limited warranty and that you can get your data back easily – within one day – if the data loss ever occurs.

The design is good; sturdy and not too bulky (and no fan, so less heat emission and noise). I’ve used bigger hard drives before, like Seagate’s Backup Plus Hub 6TB External Desktop Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0 for Mac Windows Computers , which was quite bulky in comparison.

  • Password protection built in
  • Uses USB 3.0 which is up to 4 times faster than USB 2.0

This makes this external hard drive much more portable than others (especially the bigger ones) and much more easy to fit in a bag.

The USB 3.0 connection (which is backwards compatible with USB 2.0) works quite well; it doesn’t lag or anything like that, and file transferring speeds are good (I’m currently using it to transfer data from my old laptop to my new one).

It has an indicator light that shows whether your hard drive is plugged in and in use (a blue light), and in charging mode (a red one).

On the downside though, I’ve found that the cord is extremely short – not even 1m long – so you can’t really plug it into something far away from a socket if you want fast data transfer speeds.

Also, the price tag seems a little steep for the amount of storage you get; other hard drives offer more storage space for the same price.

All in all, it’s an affordable, very functional and tough external HDD using USB 3.0 that is good value for money – but I would suggest to look around first, since nowadays there are better alternatives out there (with more storage space available at similar prices). If you want a quick overview before buying it though, this external HDD is definitely worth trying out!

Features: Rugged, drop resistant and shock resistant (tested with falls from 1.8m) – USB 3.0 compatible – Mac OS X 10.5 or later – Quick file transfer via USB 3.0 – Wireless upgrade available

Advantages: Tough and durable – 1-year limited warranty – Good protection against falls and other damages – Easy to use – Reliable, with good file transfer speeds via USB 3.0

  • Limitations:
  • Short cord –
  • high price tag for the amount of storage you get – lower battery life compared to other external HDDs (of course, that’s because it’s a portable HDD) –
  • A bit bulky
